Auctions

Auctions let you put a single valuable item up for bids from other players. When the timer runs out, the highest bid wins the item.

Auctions are posted in the Tavern under the "Auctions" tab. The latest auctions are also shown on the "Auctions" tab of the Market.

How it works

  • You pick an item, a reserve price and how long the auction runs.
  • The item leaves your inventory as soon as the auction starts.
  • Other players bid with gold. If you allow it, they can also bid with items.
  • When the timer ends, the highest bid wins if it reached your reserve price.
  • The winner gets the item automatically. You claim the winning bid from the auction.

How to create an auction

  1. Open the Tavern and go to the "Auctions" tab.
  2. Press "Create Auction".
  3. Press "Add Item" and choose the item you want to sell.
  4. Enter a minimum price, or leave it empty to use the default reserve price.
  5. Choose whether players can include items in their bids.
  6. Choose how long the auction lasts.
  7. Add a description if you want to. This is optional.
  8. Press "Create Post" to check the details, then press "Create Auction".

WARNING

You cannot cancel an auction once it has started. Make sure the item, reserve price and duration are right before you confirm.

What can be auctioned

You can auction an item if it is:

  • Tradable.
  • Worth more than 200,000 gold in estimated market value.
  • Not sold by a merchant. Items from the Celestial Exchange are the exception and can be auctioned.
  • Not wearing a skin.
  • Not an item you have borrowed.

Each auction is for one item.

Who can auction and bid

You cannot create an auction or bid on one if:

  • Your account is trade locked.
  • Your class cannot use the market, such as Banished or Cursed.
  • You are on an alternative character below total level 150.
  • Your account is flagged as high risk.

You also cannot bid on an auction created by any character on your own account.

Auction length

An auction can last 3, 5, 7, 10 or 14 days.

The timer starts as soon as the auction is created.

Fees and tax

Creation fee

Creating an auction costs 0.1% of the item's estimated market value.

  • The fee is at least 2,500 gold.
  • The fee is never more than 10,000 gold.

The fee is taken when you create the auction.

WARNING

The creation fee is never refunded. This includes when the auction ends without a sale.

Sale tax

When your item sells, tax is taken from the winning bid. Only the seller pays tax. Bidders do not.

The tax is based on the full value of the winning bid. That includes the gold and the estimated market value of any items in it.

Tax is taken from the gold in the winning bid first. If the bid is mostly items and the gold does not cover the tax, you pay the rest from your own gold when you claim.

Reserve price

The reserve price is the lowest total bid you will accept. If the highest bid is below it when the auction ends, the item comes back to you and the bidder gets their bid back.

  • If you leave the minimum price empty, a default reserve is used. This is set to 75% of the lowest price the item can normally be sold for on the market, and it is never below the item's vendor value.
  • If you set your own minimum price, it cannot be lower than the default reserve.
  • It also cannot be higher than 95% of the cheapest listing for the same item on the market right now.

The default reserve is shown to you when you pick your item.

Showing or hiding the reserve

If you set your own minimum price, you can choose whether bidders can see it with "Show reserved price to everyone". A default reserve is always shown.

Bidding

How to bid

  1. Open the auction from the Tavern or the Market.
  2. Press "Place bid".
  3. Enter how much gold to bid. If the auction accepts items, you can add those too.
  4. Press "Place bid" again, check the breakdown, then press "Confirm bid".

Bid rules

  • The first bid must be at least 1% of the item's estimated market value, with a minimum of 1,000 gold.
  • Every bid after that must beat the highest bid by at least 1%, with a minimum of 1,000 gold.
  • Each auction has a cap, the most the item can sell for. The cap is shown on the auction. Once a bid reaches it, no more bids can be placed.

Your gold and items are held while you have the highest bid. If someone outbids you, everything is returned to you straight away and you get a notification.

You can raise your own highest bid. Your old bid is returned and your new bid takes its place.

TIP

If a bid does not reach the reserve price, it still becomes the highest bid, but the gold and items are returned straight away. Someone will need to bid again and reach the reserve for the item to sell.

Bidding with items

When creating an auction, you can let players include items in their bids.

  • You choose up to 5 items you will accept.
  • Accepted items must have at least 500 in circulation.
  • A bid can include up to 5 different items, with or without gold.
  • Each item counts towards the bid at its estimated market value at the time the bid is placed.

Last minute bids

Bids placed in the last 30 minutes reset the timer to 30 minutes. This gives everyone a fair chance to respond.

Raising your own highest bid does not reset the timer.

When the auction ends

Auctions are processed every 5 minutes, so it can take a few minutes for the result to show.

  • If the highest bid reached the reserve price, the winner gets the item straight into their inventory.
  • If there were no bids, or the highest bid did not reach the reserve price, the item goes back to you.
  • If either player can no longer trade when the auction is processed, for example because they are trade locked, the sale does not go through. The item goes back to the seller and the bid goes back to the bidder.

Both players get a notification with the result.

Claiming your winnings

When your item sells, press "Claim winnings" on the auction to collect the winning bid, minus the sale tax.

  • Only the character that created the auction can claim.
  • Winnings wait for you until you claim them.
  • If you need to pay part of the tax yourself, you need enough gold at the moment you claim.

Example

You auction a sword with an estimated market value of 1,000,000 gold.

  • The creation fee is 0.1% of 1,000,000, which is 1,000 gold. That is below the minimum, so you pay 2,500 gold.
  • The first bid must be at least 10,000 gold.
  • If the highest bid is 600,000 gold, the next bid must be at least 606,000 gold.

The auction ends with a winning bid of 900,000 gold.

  • As a free player, the tax is 12%, so 108,000 gold. You receive 792,000 gold.
  • As a member, the tax is 8%, so 72,000 gold. You receive 828,000 gold.

Now say the winning bid was 100,000 gold plus items worth 800,000 gold. The full value is still 900,000 gold, so a free player still pays 108,000 gold in tax. The 100,000 gold in the bid covers most of it. You pay the other 8,000 gold yourself when you claim, and you keep all of the items.

Notes

  • Only moderators can cancel an auction. If they do, the item goes back to the seller and the highest bid goes back to the bidder.
  • When you bid, you are subscribed to the auction and get notified about new bids.
  • An auction post cannot be deleted while it is running or while winnings are waiting to be claimed.
  • Finished auctions can be found under the "Ended" tab in the Tavern.
  • Items you win or receive back can take you over your inventory limit. You will need to free up space before you can get more items.
